At this very moment, the largest urban renewal project in North America, and one of the most ambitions waterfront revitalizations ever undertaken in the world, is transforming 800 hectares of prime but neglected urban space into vibrant and sustainable mixed-use communities. Upon completion, the project will include over 40,000 residential units, 1 million sq. meters (10.76 million sq. ft) of commercial real estate and 300 hectares of public parks. And it’s all happening right here in Toronto.
Waterfront Toronto is the force behind “Toronto’s new blue edge”, a renewal initiative driven to rethink, reimagine and redefine the potential for waterfront real estate in an urban setting. With an emphasis on parks and public spaces, and a view to create a world model for urban space and planning, Waterfront Toronto is heralding environmentally and economically sustainable communities over wanton expansion. These principles have seen the project avail of the most innovative approaches to sustainable development, excellence in urban design, leading technology infrastructure and the delivery of important public policy objectives.
Arcestra has been helping to bring this vision to life in the form of computer-generated 3D models, interactive media and digital imagery for use online and to inform the community (Waterfront Toronto - Report to the Community 2011). Because a project of this scale will make such an impact on both public and private interests, the translation of abstract drawings, plans and concepts into a more visually compelling and comprehensible form was vital to securing support from all influencing parties. Arcestra's visualization enabled everyone to see the communities imagined by Waterfront Toronto, to experience and understand the breadth and scope of the entire project as it will be when complete.
Waterfront Toronto is the public advocate and steward of Toronto’s waterfront revitalization. Created by the Governments of Canada and Ontario and the City of Toronto, Waterfront Toronto is mandated to deliver a revitalized waterfront and a leading edge city-building model that seeks to place Toronto at the forefront of global cities in the 21st century (see image below). The project is advancing in phases with construction currently underway in Central Waterfront, East Bayfront and West Don Lands, and initial planning complete for Lower Don Lands.
Thank you, Waterfront Toronto -- this project is reshaping our home city and we are honoured to be a part of it.
